T'SOI Girl ready for a Marriage Event

In India, weddings are typically multi-day affairs that involve many closed ceremonies, such as applying Mehendi, playing with Turmeric which is called Haldi, flashy dance night called Sangeet and so on. In a traditional ceremony the bride’s saree is tied to the groom’s scarf to symbolize the union of the souls.

The Mangala Sutra, Varmala & Sindoor is used as a symbol of marriage. The Saptapadi, or the 7 Pheras, is the fundamental core of a Vedic wedding. The bride and groom take the seven vows around the Agni as a witness. With heavy decoration, big gatherings, singing folk songs & dance, Indian wedding is full of events. It’s a celebration of love, tradition & hope.

Eid is one of the most celebrated holidays of the year. It marks the end of Ramadan, which involves fasting during daylight hours. In India, Muslims often celebrate Eid by visiting friends and family to give gifts and have a feast together. 

One traditional treat is sheer khurma, sweet vermicelli served in milk with dried fruit and nuts. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr. They greet each other with the phrase, ‘Eid Mubarak!’

Durga—also known as Bhavani, Amba, Chandika, Gauri, Parvati and Mahishasuramardini—is the ‘Mother goddess’ and the ‘Protector of the Righteous’ to Hindu devotees. This is a nine-night celebration that more broadly celebrates the divine feminine.

She is characterized by her ten arms carrying various lethal weapons (i.e., a chakra, a sword and a mace), as well as her vehicle—the lion. On the last day of Shardiya Navratri, women from the Bengali community offer vermilion to Maa Durga. This ritual is known as Sindoor Khela. All the married women present in the pandal apply vermilion to each other. With big hawans, prasad and traditional attire this festival is all about celebrating women called as the shakti (power).

Katha means ‘tale’ and kathak means ‘storyteller’ in Sanskrit. This dance form is a combination of two words: Nritya meaning dance and Abhinay meaning act. The Ghungru, a sacred ornament worn over the ankles are essential part of this dance form.

 The rich culture, graceful gestures, refined foot movements, remarkable elegance of this dance has made Kathak an attractive art form. The magnificent Kathak is one of the most powerful and graceful dance forms of India. It has been a major part of the Indian culture for thousands of years.

Onam is a festival celebrated with great zest in the southern region of India. According to the Malayalam (Indian culture) calendar the festival is celebrated in the month of Chingam and is spread over 10 days. On this day people dress up in traditional clothes and prepare a grand feast called Onasadya. 

They decorate their houses with intricate floral rangolis called Pookalam and place banana stalks on top of it. During this time people indulge in recreational activities such as boat races and folk dance performances like Pulikali (the dance of tigers) or Kathakali.
